"Nothing can resist the human will that will stake even its existence on its stated purpose." Benjamin Disraeli After spending weeks in the midst of on-going reflection and sharing insights as they come - SEE BLOG - I'm coming to the conclusion - in a culture filled with distractions that - we ALL have a HUGE opportunity to approach EVERYTHING ON PURPOSE... What does "On Purpose" mean? A better way of doing FILL-IN-THE-BLANK that can help you achieve your full potential. Whether it's focused on life, career, or, any sub category within those two buckets. Why? We can ill afford to continue to "go through the motions"...by falling into patterns of "rote" (i.e. mechanical or habitual repetition of something - the same thing - different day akin to the movie "Ground Hog Day"). When we approach our lives in a "rote" mode, we are leaving too much on the table and MISSING what's exponentially possible. In my last blog - Gladwell's 10K-Hour Rule & Our 80K Hour Career...there was a primary reason WHY Gladwell's logic was / is WRONG about the "10,000-Hour Rule" he popularized in his book "Outliers: The Story of Success" - in which he asserted people who were performing at a world-class level, such as musicians, artists, or sportspeople, had practiced for approximately 10000 hours. Although there is more than one reason, the reason of flawed logic that relates to this topic of intentionality is "Practice itself isn't enough..." Gladwell didn't distinguish between the type of practice the musicians in the study he referenced participated. There is a very specific sort of practice referred to as "DELIBERATE practice". Deliberate practice involves constantly pushing oneself BEYOND one's comfort zone - following training activities designed by a coach / expert / third party to develop specific abilities, and using feedback to identify flaws and focus on them. What can we approach everything ON PURPOSE? I submit the more intentional we become in EVERYTHING we will be surprised - perhaps amazed - with the outcomes. How? It takes thinking ahead, a little bit of planning, and a lot of execution to get to where you want to be. My next blog will begin to focus on a key area we can apply MORE intentionality. Mind the Gap! Till then, respond to the questions below to begin to identify any gaps: The ONE question: Has not asking the tough questions ever kept me from leading a more intentional life? More specific questions: How do I want my life to matter AFTER I'm gone? What is my WHY-ering? Am I holding someone to a higher standard than myself? What faith do I lean in on? How is my career aligned with my "calling"? As a co-worker, am I one of the 3 in 10 whom is "engaged" in my work? As a manager, am I being intentional with EACH of my team members? As a leader, am I creating a culture where my CUSTOMERS notice how my employees thrive? If the responses to questions above indicate some sort of gap, please stay tuned to the next blogs!
