Wicked SMAAAAART Goal Setting...

“Living without goals is like going on a trip without a destination. If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll probably end up nowhere, and any road will get you there.”

Some of you may not know this about me but I'm from Boston. Born / bred there. Went to school in the "HARHT" of the City...spent most of my time in / around Beacon Hill, West End, North End, East Boston and finished up my time in the Back Bay...

I grew up learning to "what till next year"...with ALL the Boston sports teams. Only two exceptions - the Bruins in 1970, 1972 and Celtics who did pretty well in the 60's & 80's...since then,  the hometown teams have evolved well in the 21st century!

When it comes to growing up / going to school...can't think of a better place.

With that said, I'd like to pay homage to my hometown Boston by applying the accent Bostonians are so well known...to goal setting.

In my previous blog I spoke about "our professional rock moved back to the bottom of the hill of annual targets, accomplishments and milestones. In other words, to begin anew." I re-introduce an old-stand by enhanced by adding several layers. As you will see, you will have plenty of opportunity to adapt it for what works for YOU and YOUR team.

SMAAAAART Goals

S - specific - state exactly what you want to accomplish (who, what, where, when, why). Other "S" possibilities - significant, stretching.

M - measurable - how will you demonstrate / measure your progress? Other "M" possibilities - meaningful, motivational.

A - agreed - parties should be of the same mind-set toward a goal.

A - attainable - yeah, we heard of WAGs (wild-ass goals) but don't go too crazy...see point above.

A - achievable - see above.

A - accountable - it's great to have goals. It's also great to be accountable to achieving the goal.

A - action-oriented - is there any other kind of goals / objective worth working toward if it did not involve some sort of action?

R - realistic - a sensible and practical idea of what can be achieved or expected. Other "R" possibilities - relevant, reasonable, rewarding, results-oriented.

T - time-based - WHEN will the goal be acheived? Other "T" possibilities - time-bound, timely, tangible, trackable.

My best to your quest!
