Want to Transform? You'll Need This One Thing...

Transformation...just the word elicits varying responses from folks...good, bad, or worse, indifference. Perhaps it's due to the sheer failure rate of transformation / change initiatives...there're hard! 

The sources who cite the vast failure rates include: McKinsey and Company, IBM, Harvard Business Review, Forbes/Towers Watson, Connor Partners, US News & World Reports to name several. The reality is more transformation initiatives fail than succeed.  

Transformation CAN take place for the individual and an organization! In EITHER case the transformation BEGINS from within...

So, if you intend to make a change or to transform...make sure at a minimum you have this ONE thing...

Before I share the one thing - SEE the blog: Wicked SMAAAAART Goal Setting...AND let me share some of the other "nice-to-haves" to make your transformation efforts a success.
  • PAIN...
It's said that if you want to change or transform you need pain...without pain, the desire to change is really just that...a desire. Add a strong dose of pain and the desire not only gets enhanced it becomes a NECESSITY. In other words, you HAVE to transform or else.
  • Vision for what success looks like...
Borrowing from Stephen Covey - begin with the end in mind. What does a transformed you or organization look like?
  • Plan to get there...
Have one!
  • Buy-in...
Without support and COMPLETE buy-in from your team you will be playing lip service to the goal. If the transformation is a personal one - have buy-in from your significant other and family.
  • Open mind...
An open vessel let's new matter in. Transformation requires NEW... 
  • The 3 P's:
    - Patience...it will take longer than you think.
    - Persistence...it will take more persistence than you know.
    - Perseverance...expect set-backs. When they come, roll with it!

OK...so, you have those things lined up and in place...so what's the ONE thing?

A breakthrough is defined as "an important discovery or development"...

The rationale is simple...a TRANSFORMATION is business-life-changing. In order for it to stick you need the BREAKTHROUGH to provide the incentive and motivation to help you through the rough spots toward your goal. Your opportunity is to identify YOUR breakthrough!

The breakthrough can be driven by:

Competitor
Data
Economics
Feedback
Insight
Outside source
Technology

Since we are different - as different as thumbprints - the breakthroughs are NOT one-size-fits-all. You though have to be driven to identify YOURS.

How to Identify Yours...

Be honest with yourself...
- TWO key questions you can seek the answers:
  1. WHO are you?
  2. Where do you want to end up?
Know your gifts...
Open yourself to feedback...
Lean in on your gifts...
Look beyond you...(in other words, get help!)
Let go of the past with the objective to embrace the future!

Without YOUR breakthrough you will fall short in your transformation...don't fall short! Identify your BREAKTHROUGH and TRANSFORM!
